Why I Love This
A wonderful survivor from a London fashion house that has almost disappeared from the record.
Dating from approximately 1970, this Margot Paynton dress has all the elegant confidence of the period: a long, narrow striped silhouette, wide scoop neckline and an extraordinary bias-cut bow with two beautifully pointed tails.
The most remarkable detail is the hem? Three near-transparent, black-edged organza flounces float over the continuing striped foundation, allowing the monochrome pattern to remain visible beneath every layer. It is witty, feminine and exquisitely considered—an Audrey-inspired evening dress with genuine individuality.
The original label reads Margot Paynton London, size 12. Margot Paynton Limited appears in an official 1972 notice concerning companies proposed for removal from the register, helping place the label firmly within this earlier period of British fashion.

Condition
Beautifully preserved and immaculate overall. There is one small localised hole in the organza of the lowest tier. It is difficult to notice when the dress is worn but has been photographed and disclosed for complete accuracy.
